Professional:Overview
A UI / UX Designer and Developer With over 25 years commercial experience.
Form follows function
I firmly believe that form follows function and that design is no more subjective than development. Creativity and elegant interactions are as much the domain of the technical implementation as the visual design, and both communicate to your audience. A poorly optimised database or service can lead to a breakdown of user experience, just as easily as insufficient design signifiers or an inconsistent visual design language.
Thinking across domains
I believe that the most robust solutions come from understanding design and technology as a single medium; and that identifying the right approach involves thinking and communicating across these domains. Working with stakeholders is not merely gathering requirements but working collaboratively to understand the ideas underlying those requirements, challenging established paradigms, and exploring solutions alongside multi-discipline teams. My broad background allows me to help businesses design and deliver products, tools and services in this way.
Empathy and critical thinking
I champion applied empathy, critical thinking, and active listening for effective cross-domain communication and collaboration. I am actively involved in a non-profit that fosters critical thinking. I mentor others to engage in constructive dialogue, even on challenging topics.
Leading teams
I enjoy leading teams where I emphasise pragmatism, ownership and accountability, cultivating mutual respect and a collective sense of ownership of both success and challenge within teams. As a manager and stakeholder, I work hard to provide clear direction, set expectations and provide constructive and honest feedback.
Security clearance
I have previously held Basic Check (BC) and Security Check (SC) clearances to work on sensitive projects for the UK government (MoD, MoJ). Although these clearances have since expired I know of no reason they could not be reattained.
