About Me

Born in England, I am a british citizen living in England with a full right to work in the UK. I am fluent in English as my native language. Originally from Nottingham, the land of Robin Hood, I now live 35min from Kings Cross, London; or as the delightful Dr. Watson puts it in the opening of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet:

I naturally gravitated to London, that great cesspool into which all the loungers and idlers of the Empire are irresistibly drained. Chapter 1, A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Height and Ergonomics

Standing at 192 cm (or 6'4"), I am significantly taller than the UK average male height of 175.9 cm and the global average of 177 cm. While not exceptionally tall, my height can put me at odds with the everyday ergonomics of the modern world, and gives me a real appreciation for inelegant adaptive design principles.

About My Brain

I have Dyslexia and Aphantasia, these conditions have had a negligible impact on my life, personally and professionally. They are, however, interesting, and I suspect, in their way, they provide me with an atypical perspective on the world and the way I see and solve problems.

Photography

I have been an amateur photographer for over 20 years now, and continue to find new ways to enjoy and think about photography. For much of my photography, I have worked with some amazing people to build a portfolio of creative and edgy portraits.

Whilst always artistic some of my images might reasonably be considered not safe for work (NSFW). You can opt-in to seeing such images via the button below.

You can see more of my photography on my glass.photo profile which, again, features some images that might be considered NSFW.

Video Games

I have been playing video games my whole life and show no signs of stopping anytime soon. The interplay of technology, narrative and art never fails to inspire, intrigue and delight.

Making games

I have spent some time learning to make my games both with web technologies and then later GameMaker Studio, Unity (Although only very briefly), Unreal 5 and then finally. Godot, where I fell in love with the spirited little open source underdog.

Japan and Japanese

My wife is Japanese, and we lived together in Japan for six months. We mostly lived in Osaka but also travelled a fair bit to places such as Kyoto, Nagasaki, Nara, Hyogo and Okayama. I am (very slowly) learning Japanese. (わたし の にっぽん ご のうりょく は ひくい です).

Japan profoundly influenced me. As a modern culture that evolved without the classical western heritage of Rome and Jerusalem it acts as a fascinating counterpoint to established attitudes and ideas I have grown up with. It's easy for a foreigner to fall in love with Japan and its people, and whilst there are certainly some aspects of the culture that are not to be entirely admired, the sense of dignity, pride and respect that permeates Japanese culture is something I wish we had more of in the West. The ownership that the Japanese seem to take in everything they do is something I will never forget, and I seek to embrace it in my own life and inspire those I mentor.
